Chapter 13, Part 1: Aftermath
As the quantum harmonics of the Reality Rumble faded, Aria found Lady Kitsune Starweaver waiting for her and asked, composure slipping, whether they had just broadcast reality-bending combat across Earth. The producer assured her the Earth feed had been carefully curated: no dimensional tears, no reality collapses, just some remarkably creative special effects as far as her world was concerned. A portal to the Training Room revealed Aria’s exhausted but exhilarated team deep in animated tactical discussion with Rei, their earlier apprehension completely forgotten. Kaoru declared the fight had broken every meta they had ever known, while Anastasia concluded that physical laws were more “negotiable” than previously calculated. Aria praised them all and reminded them that while a heavily edited version of the fight would inspire Explorers worldwide, the full extent of what had happened there was another matter. Elena finished the thought for her: it would remain their secret, since even accurate descriptions would be dismissed as stress-induced hallucinations. Rei, trying to hide a genuine smile, told them they were welcome in LA anytime, since the Raid was a safe space for comparing reality-bending techniques.
A few days later, the UK established the International Dungeon Exploration Authority (IDEA), with unanimous agreement that Aria should head the organization, and that evening’s public announcement was met with considerable acclaim. The next morning she was startled awake by Vaeloria literally bouncing off her bedroom walls, with Mittens diplomatically absent: Aria had received an official summons from the House Stellarwhisker. As Vaeloria explained, the Three Great Houses rule everything across every dimension and reality, and the House Stellarwhisker controls this entire sector of existence. Most planets go whole galactic cycles without being summoned, and the last such summons had gone out somewhere around Earth’s Precambrian Era. Since cosmic royalty hates tardiness, Vaeloria hurried her straight through a portal.
Aria emerged into a reception chamber in space, an unfamiliar blue-green planet hanging outside its vast windows, where the Royal Mice hosted beings of all sizes. Lady Kitsune Starweaver was waiting there as well, her tails betraying barely contained anxiety. Describing herself as merely Vulpinian nobility, she had come as Aria’s protocol-mandated escort, had already supplied the court with her dossier, and warned that personal summons from the House Stellarwhisker were beyond unprecedented. Announced as Baroness Aria of Greenwich, Aria entered a throne room that put Westminster Abbey to shame, where a court of beings of every conceivable form parted to reveal two thrones of condensed starlight, each occupied by a tiny white mouse, with a third mouse seated more modestly nearby. Her title only puzzled the assembled dignitaries. When Lady Kitsune explained that Greenwich was a district within a city on ORN-3, King Maximilian Stellarwhisker III declared that a title covering a mere district of a single planet would not stand and elevated her on the spot to Duchess of the Orion Residency Nexus, Warden of the Third Sphere. Queen Celestia Stellarwhisker sighed that he had just put Aria in charge of the entire solar system because he did not understand Earth geography, but the King insisted the celestial cheese of destiny had decreed it.
Prompted by a holographic document Lady Kitsune pressed urgently into her hands, Aria recited a pledge of loyalty to the mighty House Stellarwhisker by the sacred rinds of the Cosmic Cheese and the eternal squeak of spacetime, which the King pronounced well squeaked. He then directed her into the Circle of Celestial Cheese, an elaborate magic circle combining impossibly complex runes with an equally sophisticated cheese wheel diagram. As the court chanted in harmonies that resonated with the cosmic background radiation itself, light erupted from the circle and flowed through Aria like liquid starlight. She felt herself floating among the constellations before consciousness slipped away, and she awoke in a bed crafted from solidified nebulae, floating gently in a gravity field.
Key Takeaways:
Lady Kitsune confirmed the Earth broadcast was carefully curated, showing only “remarkably creative special effects” with no dimensional tears or reality collapses.
Aria’s team agreed the full extent of the fight would remain their secret, since even accurate descriptions would be dismissed as stress-induced hallucinations.
Rei parted on friendly terms, inviting the team to LA anytime and calling the Raid a safe space for comparing reality-bending techniques.
The UK established the International Dungeon Exploration Authority (IDEA) and unanimously chose Aria to head it, to considerable public acclaim.
Aria received an official summons from the House Stellarwhisker, one of the Three Great Houses that rule every dimension and reality, the first such summons since roughly Earth’s Precambrian Era.
Lady Kitsune Starweaver, describing herself as merely Vulpinian nobility, escorted Aria to the Royal Mice’s court in space and had already supplied it with her dossier.
King Maximilian Stellarwhisker III, baffled that her title covered a mere city district, elevated Aria to Duchess of the Orion Residency Nexus, Warden of the Third Sphere, which Queen Celestia noted put her in charge of the entire solar system.
After pledging loyalty to House Stellarwhisker, Aria stepped into the Circle of Celestial Cheese, lost consciousness in a surge of starlight, and awoke in a bed of solidified nebulae floating in a gravity field.
Aftermath (Part 2)
King Maximilian Stellarwhisker III: “Ah, you’re awake!” his earlier formal tone replaced by genuine relief. “I must admit, we were rather concerned. That particular ritual hasn’t been performed since the Great Quantum Cheese Renaissance.”
He sounds different... wait, what does he mean ‘concerned’? Aria felt suddenly very alert.
King Maximilian Stellarwhisker III: “Before I attend to other matters, please accept our profound gratitude for returning our beloved Prince Casimir Stellarwhisker to us,” he said with genuine warmth. “The Royal Astronomers have been searching the quantum probability streams for centuries!” With that, he departed to address what appeared to be a guard carrying an urgent celestial cheese report.
Aria: “Would someone please explain what just happened?” she asked, still trying to process everything. “Last thing I remember was entering that circle...”
Vaeloria: “OMG, it’s like, the most amazing thing ever!” she bounced excitedly. “Remember that salt you gave to that totally sketchy mouse at the Pleiades Entertainment Hub? That was literally the lost Prince Casimir Stellarwhisker!”
Aria: “The one asking for salt by the buffet?” she blinked in astonishment. “He’s royalty?”
Lady Kitsune Starweaver: “Indeed, darling,” her tails arranged themselves in an elegant pattern of amusement. “Pure-grade salt apparently breaks quantum memory blocks. Who knew?”
Vaeloria: “And OMG, during your totally epic broadcast, Prince Casimir Stellarwhisker was like, watching with the whole House Stellarwhisker! He literally jumped up and was all ‘That’s her! The one who helped me!’”
Lady Kitsune Starweaver: “The prince’s recognition of you during the broadcast caused quite the stir,” her tails arranged themselves in a pattern suggesting barely contained amusement. “Royal protocol officers had to be revived with emergency quantum smelling salts.”
A random interdimensional salt junkie turned out to be a cosmic prince. My life has definitely taken some interesting turns.
Aria: “And what exactly was that ritual about?” she asked carefully. “Also, did I hear correctly about becoming Duchess of the Orion Residency Nexus, Warden of the Third Sphere (formerly known as Baroness of Greenwich)?”
Lady Kitsune Starweaver: “Ah yes,” her tails twitched with barely contained mirth. “In his... enthusiasm, His Celestial Majesty has placed you in charge of what your people call the Solar System.”
Aria: “WHAT?”
Vaeloria: “Plus you got this totally amazing cosmic upgrade!” she began counting on fingers that left trails in reality. “Like, a few thousand Earth years of life, immunity to boring things like the vacuum of space...”
Aria’s mind struggled to process this information.
Vaeloria: “Oh! And the absolute best part? You’ve got full royal portal privileges! No more paperwork for interdimensional travel!”
Lady Kitsune Starweaver: “The ritual has granted you what we call ‘Cosmic Resilience,’” she explained with elegant precision. “The fundamental forces of reality - gravity, pressure, atmospheric requirements - they’re more like... suggestions now. Rather convenient for managing an entire star system, wouldn’t you say?”
The last thing Aria heard before stress-induced unconsciousness claimed her was Vaeloria excitedly listing all the cool places they could now visit without filling out quantum permission forms. When Aria woke for the second time, Lady Kitsune Starweaver was absent. Vaeloria stood by the window, enthusiastically operating some impossibly complex machinery. Through the viewport, a familiar grey sphere hung in space.
Vaeloria: “OMG, you’re totally awake! Perfect timing!” she bounced excitedly while adjusting quantum dials. “We’re like, almost there!”
Aria: “Is that...” she squinted at the view, “...Earth’s moon?”
Vaeloria: “Like, totally! Your new Galactic office just hit the perfect parking spot!” she confirmed while making final adjustments. “You Earth people call it the L2 Lagrange point or whatever.”
Aria: “WHY do I have an office in space?”
Vaeloria: “Chill! We’re behind the Moon so nobody can see us,” she explained, gesturing at the complex machinery. “Plus this station’s got like, the most epic Galactic Magic Federation cloaking tech ever! Earth’s primitive sensors couldn’t find us even if they tried!”
Aria: “But why do I need a space office at all?”
Vaeloria: “OMG, did you literally forget?” she giggled. “King Maximilian Stellarwhisker III put you in charge of your whole solar system! You need somewhere to do all that cosmic paperwork!”
Aria: “I had actually managed to forget that part!” panic crept into her voice.
Vaeloria: “Don’t even stress about it!” she waved dismissively. “I’ll help you get everything set up - staff, systems, quantum coffee machine, the works! It’ll be totally amazing!”
Aria: “Staff?” Aria’s voice rose an octave. “I need staff?”
Vaeloria: “Well duh! Have you ever seen like, any fancy government place without a whole bunch of people doing important stuff?” she bounced on her toes. “Even Earth embassies have local staff!”
Aria: “This is...” she pressed her fingers to her temples, “...a lot to process.”
Vaeloria: “I know right? Not every day you get promoted to galactic royalty!” she said while opening a portal to Aria’s London apartment. “Take a few days to chill. Reality-bending powers and cosmic authority will totally still be here when you get back!”
At home, everything was quiet. Mittens was still away and the entire place felt empty. Despite having been unconscious twice in the past day, sleep eluded Aria. After hours of tossing and turning, she decided fresh air might help and went for a walk. Her feet carried her unconsciously to the London Guild Hall, empty at this late hour except for her favorite bench - and an unexpected visitor.
Mr. Wiskers: “Well, if it ain’t galactic royalty herself,” he grinned, whiskers twitching with amusement. “Fancy seein’ you in our humble establishment, nebulisce?”
Aria: “Please don’t...” she groaned. “How did you even know?”
Mr. Wiskers: “I got my sources, wise star,” he said cryptically, grooming his paw. “Besides, dis kinda thing happens maybe once every few cosmic cycles. You’re da talk of three galaxies right now.”
Aria: “And here I thought I was getting used to interdimensional fame,” she massaged her temples, feeling another headache coming on.
Mr. Wiskers: “When ya settle into your new role, maybe we can discuss some business opportunities,” he suggested smoothly. “Da kind dat benefit both parties, if ya catch my drift.” With that, he vanished into the shadows with feline grace, leaving Aria alone on her bench.
A few moments later, Kate passed by and noticed Aria in her usual spot.
Kate: “Congratulations on the promotion!” she beamed. “Everyone’s talking about it!”
Aria: “Thanks,” she replied wearily. “Though I’m not sure I’m qualified to manage something this... vast.”
Kate: “Don’t be modest! Your diplomatic experience makes you perfect for international coordination.”
Aria: “More like universal coincidence,” she muttered. “Everything lately has been one cosmic accident after another.”
Kate: “Nonsense! Your work with the Guild system has prepared you perfectly for this role.”
Aria: “I suppose exploring unknown territory is what I do best,” she admitted with a slight smile. “Even if this is a bit more... expansive than usual.”
Kate: “That’s the spirit! So, what’s first on your agenda?”
Aria: “Staff recruitment, actually,” she replied thoughtfully. “Finding the right people for... positions that are rather out of this world.”
Kate: “Oh, I’d love to help! I know everyone in the Explorer community!”
Aria: “The positions might be a bit too... elevated for most candidates,” she said carefully, glancing skyward. “But thank you.”
Kate: “Well, whatever your new responsibilities involve, I know you’ll rise to the occasion,” she said warmly. “You’ve always had a knack for handling the impossible.”
Aria left the Guild Hall with renewed purpose. Her future stretched before her, both on Earth and far beyond, filled with challenges she’d never imagined facing. But then, she’d never imagined half the things that had already happened to her. Whatever adventures tomorrow might bring - terrestrial or cosmic - they could wait until after a proper cup of tea.
The story pauses here... for now.
